Strategic development

The Indian Ocean Coral Project

Our next strategic development is the Indian Ocean Coral Project, focused on the captive propagation of Western Indian Ocean coral species and the development of responsible pathways for reef rehabilitation.

The project aims to establish propagation capacity for regionally appropriate coral stock, support research into heat-tolerant and low-pH-tolerant strains, and help address challenges associated with genetic provenance, biosecurity and the movement of marine organisms between regions.

Project focus

Long-term ambition

The longer-term vision is to contribute to a network of regional propagation capabilities serving marine research, reef restoration and responsible international coral supply.

Broader marine aquaculture interests

Sea urchins
Seahorses
Sea cucumbers
Selected fish-ranching programmes

Supported by appropriate husbandry and biosecurity practices.

Established capability

Where our journey began

Power Lab Aquariums is the marine-biotechnology foundation of Power Lab Systems. Our work in aquarium systems, aquatic life support, biological filtration and marine aquaculture has developed around a central principle: understanding biological systems and engineering the conditions in which they can thrive.

This foundation provides the technical context for our expanding work in marine propagation, environmental restoration and biotechnology-driven resource recovery.

Applied engineering

Engineering biological systems

The principles underlying marine life-support systems extend into a wider field of biotechnology. Filtration, fluid dynamics, water chemistry, process control and the management of biological activity are relevant to the design of controlled aquatic environments and industrial treatment systems.

In development

Modular filtration and resource recovery

Power Lab Systems applies this broader engineering perspective to the development of modular filtration and resource-recovery solutions, including systems designed for challenging industrial and aquaculture waste streams.

Complementary programme

Connecting marine resources to organics

Our organics projects extend the resource-recovery philosophy into the production of useful agricultural products.

Through the development of suitable treatment and processing systems, organic materials can be investigated for conversion into:

These activities are complementary parts of the wider Power Lab ecosystem. They share an interest in biological processes, engineered treatment systems and the productive use of resources that might otherwise be discarded.

The objective is to develop practical technologies that connect environmental responsibility with commercial value.

Long-term ambition

Research, education and collaboration

Power Lab Aquariums also provides a platform for education, scientific engagement and collaboration. The longer-term ambition is to connect students, researchers, aquaculture practitioners and conservation partners with the science and engineering behind marine ecosystems and responsible biotechnology.
